When and Where

The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival runs from July 28-29 in the beautiful setting of Sloan’s Lake Park. This annual event has been a community favorite since its debut in 2001, and attendees from all over the country gather in Denver to view the incredible sport of dragon boat racing. The festival often draws crowds upwards of 125,000, and is an awesome chance to get a glimpse of Asian culture without leaving the city limits. The festival kicks off on Saturday, July 28 at 10:15 am with the opening ceremony. However, races start at 8:00 a.m. on both days, so be sure to arrive early if you don’t want to miss a second of the action. The team roster continues to grow each year, and the Year of the Dog (2018) is sure to get your adrenaline pumping as you watch the dozens of teams vie for victory. 

If you’re planning to attend, parking is available at the Auraria Higher Education Center.A free shuttle service will be onsite, and several bus routes will also take you to Sloan’s Lake Park.

Festival Activities

Dragon boat racing is the highlight of the event, but there’s a plethora of activities to enjoy. In addition to the teams competing in this 2,000-year-old sport, the park will come alive with music, dancing, workshops, and more. The Origami workshop is an especially popular feature, as well as the martial arts combat and weapons demo. As you explore the area, you’ll have the opportunity to sample quintessential Asian and Asian American cuisine and peruse the marketplace.
