It’s finally spring in Denver, and the arrival of balmy days and blooming trees means it’s the perfect time to get outside. Make BBQs, house parties, and evenings on the patio more fun with creative cocktails. Don’t worry about the heat; stay cool with these recipes for springtime refreshments.

La Paloma

The sassy cousin of a margarita, a Paloma is an excellent cocktail to enjoy on Taco Tuesdays or any time the weather gets scorching hot.

  • 2 oz tequila (ideally Reposado)
  • ½ oz fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • A pinch of salt
  • Grapefruit soda (or juice)

Combine tequila, lime juice, and salt in a highball glass. Top with grapefruit soda. Stir and serve.

Let the combination of mint leaves and lime transport you to the Caribbean wherever you may be.

  • ½ oz fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • 1 tsp of super-fine granulated sugar
  • 3 mint leaves (or more, to taste)
  • 2 oz white rum
  • Club soda or seltzer water

In a Collins glass, muddle lime juice and sugar. Add the mint leaves and mash them against the sides. Fill the glass 2/3rds with ice. Pour over the rum, add a lime wedge garnish, and fill with club soda.

Whiskey Sour

Did you know that Denver has several Whiskey distilleries? Whiskey isn’t just meant for winter nights anymore. Here’s how to freshen up this dark liquor to make it a springtime sensation.

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • ⅔ oz lemon juice
  • 1 tsp of super-fine granulated sugar

Add all ingredients to a shaker along with cracked ice. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with either a lemon or orange wedge.

Pineapple and Sage Gimlet

Throwing a party and want to serve a punch that’ll have your guests surprised and delighted? Look no further than this modern update of the classic gimlet. This recipe is for a group-sized portion, so pare it down if you’re the only one imbibing.

  • 7 ½ oz gin
  • 3 ¾ oz pineapple juice
  • 3 oz simple syrup
  • 7 sage leaves

Muddle together the sage leaves and simple syrup in a punch bowl or serving pitcher. Add ice. Add the remaining ingredients and stir. Garnish with fresh pineapple.

Blueberry Rum Smash

Like the name suggests, this drink is for those who love bold flavors. The Blueberry Rum Smash is a great, easy cocktail for when you want to impress.

  • Fresh blueberries
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • ¾ oz fresh-squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 oz rum
  • Ginger ale

Cover the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass with fresh blueberries. If your glass is on the smaller side, make a double layer of blueberries. Add the brown sugar and lemon juice. Muddle the ingredients, but don’t smash all of the blueberries into a pulp. Top with crushed ice and then pour over the rum. Top with ginger ale and stir.
